The Butterfly Quilt

This quilt was given to me by my friend Jackie P. She doesn’t remember whether it was made by her mother or a long-time friend of ours. The fabrics suggest it was made in the 1930’s – 1960’s. It came to me complete except for the quilting (stitching through all 3 layers).

I quilted the butterfly blocks by outline stitching the butterfly and then again just inside the embroidery edging. The plain tangerine rectangles (which look like linen) are just straight line stitched.

Unfortunately, the quilt smelled of mothballs and long storage, so I had to wash and re-rinse twice before drying to make it acceptable for gifting. That’s why it looks a bit wrinkly. My quilt guild will donate this one to a local women’s shelter. Each room has a quilt on the bed when women arrive there, intended to make the women feel at home and cared for.

Project 5 of 52 completed for One/Week for a Year.
